+ Are large cracks normal?

Yes and no. Cracks in log furniture are a normal feature. Cracks on a table top are not normal, with the exception of slab tables. Large slabs have a tendency to move, expand and contract, with the relative temperature and humidity of the room they are in and are prone to cracking.
